Ponerse el mundo por montera quiere decir “hacer algo muy valiente sin pensar en las consecuencias”, porque los toreros hacen algo parecido cuando van a torear.

Poner la puntilla significa rematar una situación mala, que ocurra algo malo en una situación ya mala.

Se ha roto el grifo y, para poner la puntilla, no tengo cubos para recoger el agua.

Y, por último, estirar la pata es lo que hace el toro al morir cuando le ponen la puntilla, por eso se utiliza de forma coloquial como morir:

To make the “-mente” version of the word (like the -ly version of English words: easily, completely) you just have to choose the adjective, make it feminine and add the -mente!

Why? Because it comes from the word “mente”, which means mind, and mente is a feminine word. For example, rápidamente, in its origin, it meant something like “con una mente rápida“.

Pero… ¿Qué significa “agotado”?

La palabra “agotado” viene del verbo “agotar” que etimológicamente significa, más o menos, extraer hasta la última “gota” un líquido. Con este uso, podríamos decir “se ha agotado el petróleo del pozo” o “agota la botella”.

Pero el significado ahora es más amplio: significa terminar con algo, extraer algo hasta el final. Puede ser, por ejemplo, un producto en el supermercado, “la carne está agotada” o la energía de las personas, “el trabajo me agota”.

But… what does “agotado” mean?

The word “agotado” comes from the verb “agotar”, which etymologically means, more or less, to extract a liquid down to the last “drop”. With this usage, we could say “the oil in the well has been exhausted” or “drain the bottle”.

But the meaning now is broader: it means to finish something, to extract something completely. It could be, for example, a product in the supermarket, “the meat is sold out” (agotada), or a person’s energy, “work exhausts me”.

Despistarse, un despiste, estar despistado… Estas palabras vienen de la palabra original pista y, saber de dónde viene puede ayudarnos a entender el resto de significados.

Una pista es una pequeña información que recibes o consigues para poder descubrir una realidad más grande.

Por ejemplo: No entiendo esta frase, ¿puedes darme una pista?

Pero es que la palabra pista viene de la palabra italiana para pisada (del verbo pisar). Porque el origen del significado son las huellas o las pisadas que indicaban dónde estaban los animales o las personas que perseguían.

Despistar significa, en su origen, borrar las huellas para que la otra persona no sepa cómo llegar al destino. Ahora se utiliza más como confundir a otra persona.

Si dices despistarse, es la propia persona haciéndose eso a sí misma. Perder el camino que estaba siguiendo. Todos tenemos momentos en los que nos despistamos, nos sentimos confundidos.

Ser un despistado es, básicamente, una persona que se despista muchas veces. Y un despiste es una confusión aislada, un olvido.

Por ejemplo: ¡Vaya despiste! Me he despistado y me he olvidé las llaves en casa. Soy demasiado despistado.

EXTRA: Pista también significa un terreno o una superficie donde practicar algunos deportes, como pista de atletismo o pista de baloncesto. ¿Por qué? Porque pisas en ellos.

A pista is a small piece of information you receive or obtain in order to uncover a larger reality.

For example: No entiendo esta frase, ¿puedes darme una pista? (I don’t understand this sentence, can you give me a hint?)

But the word pista actually comes from the Italian word for footprint (from the verb pisar, to step on). Because the origin of the meaning is footprints or tracks that indicated where the animals or people being pursued were.

Despistar originally meant to erase the tracks so that they don’t know how to reach the destination. Nowadays it is used more to mean to confuse someone.

If you say despistarse (the reflexive form), it means the person does that to themselves: they lose the path they were following. We all have moments when we get distracted, when we feel confused.

Being un despistado is basically a person who gets distracted a lot. And un despiste is an isolated moment of confusion, a lapse.

For example: ¡Vaya despiste! Me he despistado y me he olvidado las llaves en casa. Soy demasiado despistado. (What a scatterbrain! I got distracted and left my keys at home. I’m so absent-minded.)

EXTRA: Pista can also mean a surface or area where certain sports are played, such as pista de atletismo (athletics track) or pista de baloncesto (basketball court). Why? Because you step on them.

Y es que la palabra ocio, sinónimo de entretenimiento o diversión, tiene un opuesto: negocio (negación del ocio).

El prefijo neg- viene del latín y en español ya no tiene muchas palabras con él, pero aparece en negar, negativo o negación. Y, curiosamente, la palabra necio también viene de aquí.

La palabra negocio está relacionada con el inglés negotiation (negociación) o negotiate (negociar), o el italiano negozio (tienda).

Por su parte, ocio tiene algunas palabras derivadas como ocioso (vago, con tiempo libre).

¡Las dos son correctas!

Ojear significa mirar algo rápido con los ojos, mientras que hojear significa pasar las hojas rápido, por ejemplo, de un libro o una revista. Y aquí viene el “problema”: si escuchas la frase “estoy ojeando una revista” no puedes saber si se refiere a “ojear” u “hojear” porque las dos se pronuncian excatamente igual.

Pero, realmente, no importa mucho porque, en ese contexto, las dos indican que está mirándolo rápido y, probablemente, sin mucho interés.

Both are correct!

Ojear means to glance at something quickly with your eyes, while hojear means to flip through the pages quickly, for example, of a book or magazine. And here comes the “problem”: if you hear the phrase “estoy ojeando una revista” (I’m glancing through a magazine), you can’t tell if it refers to “ojear” or “hojear” because they are pronounced exactly the same.

But, really, it doesn’t matter much because, in that context, both indicate that the person is looking at it quickly and, probably, without much interest.

Perseguir tiene el prefijo “per-” que indica hacer algo durante largo tiempo o hacer algo completamente. Por eso, perseguir da una percepción de tiempo más largo que seguir. Del mismo modo, tenemos palabras como perfecto (hecho completamente), permanecer (estar en el mismo sitio mucho tiempo) o perseverancia (estar serio, severo, mucho tiempo).

La palabra ayuno es también muy útil. Los musulmanes en ramadán, por ejemplo, hacen un ayuno. Y también algunos cristianos en cuaresma. Y ahora está muy de moda el ayuno intermitente. Y cuando necesitas hacerte un análisis de sangre, normalmente vas por la mañana temprano para ir en ayunas.

Una última curiosidad: durante un tiempo, el verbo era reflexivo: desayunarse. pero si dices yo entendería comerse a sí mismo para desayunar y suena raro.
